Follow Fest: Hello, World!

NOTE: Eeeek! A post that's not on a Wednesday! I know, I know, what is the world coming to?? Well, I'm being adventurous. Which is to say that I'm doing something thoroughly normal, and participating in Follow Fest 2013, in order to introduce this little blog to the World Wide Web. That's right, the ENTIRE INTERNET. It's a big day. I'll be back on Wednesday with a regular post, as per usual.

Name: Liz Blocker

Fiction or nonfiction? Fiction! Someday I may leap into the world of the real, but right now, I'm much better at making things up.

What genres do you write? Literary fiction, mostly (although I'm not a fan of the name of that genre). I love and read many genres, but I write straight fiction with a good amount of magical realism dabbed in, and more than a few touches of the fantastic. I also write plays, and, someday, screenplays.

Are you published? I'm working on it. Stay tuned!

Do you do anything in addition to writing? Oh gracious me, no. I have no day job and can therefore devote myself entirely to writing. HA! Or not. I'm a massage therapist, and a devoted-but-not-very-good runner, a reader for sure, and an editor for my friends.

Where can people connect with you?

  • Here! On the blog. lizblocker.blogspot.com. There are follow buttons for blogluvin, email, and RSS feeds on the left-hand side of the page, under the header photo.
  • Twitter: Come find me @lizblocker. There are also follow buttons under the header on the left, and at the very top right.
  • Google+. And of course there are follow buttons in the same places as above.

Thanks for stopping by!! I post here every Wednesday. On the first Wednesday of the month, I have a good old IWSG post. I'm open to guest posts, releases, cover reveals, etc. Message me on Twitter, and we'll chat..

Oh, and leave a comment! I love comments.

  2. Super cool. Nice to meet you, and I'm surprised we haven't bumped into each other before--or maybe we have and mommy brain has erased it from my history. *sigh* Ah the perks of growing up.

    1. Hi Crystal, nope, I don't think we have - but your name is really familiar to me. So maybe we both just blanked out? Either way, nice to meet you. Again. Or for the first time ;)

  4. Hi Liz! I've been to your blog before but it's good to be back via Follow Fest! I'll go and find you other places online. Hope to see you around! By the way, "straight fiction with a good amount of magical realism dabbed in" sounds like my kind of story:)

  5. Day jobs... We'd probably get a lot more writing done without them. But then we'd probably starve, too. Following you on Twitter!

  9. Well Liz,

Getting out of your comfort zone is a good thing. We writers need to live outside of our comfort zones to make sure we pen it all down for those too frightened to ever do so. Adventurous is a trait we need to have, so you're doing just fine!

I believe I follow you in all the venues we share. :)

  10. I'm a runner too (mostly trail running) ! Though not a very good one, but I enjoy it. Great to meet you, Liz!

    1. Me neither, but enjoyment is the big thing, right? I would absolutely be a trail runner if I didn't live in the city. Nice to meet you, too!

  11. Great to meet you, Liz. I also don't especially like the category "literary fiction," because the meaning seems to be constantly in flux. I tend to think of it as fiction that's thematically complex and is general audience (unlike, for example, romance, which often is unappealing to men or techno-thriller, which isn't as popular with women). But to others, "literary" means realistic fiction about muddled people talking and feeling and not doing much of anything, usually with unresolved or sad endings.

I definitely think magical realism should fit within literary--its a great way to create complex themes (and have an actual plot!)

    1. Thanks, Laurel. I totally agree. It's such a broad 'genre', and seems to imply that others genres aren't literary. And magical realism doesn't show up on most genre lists, so I say you're right, and we should just include it in literary fiction!

  13. It's great to meet you, Liz. I've written screenplays a number of year ago. It's such a great way to achieve economy of words, and it's great fun!
I do so like literary fiction!

    1. That was the hardest thing for me when I switched from playwrighting to fiction: forgetting about word economy. I was so used to choosing every single word with care; I couldn't believe how many I suddenly got to use! Now, of course, I use way too many. It's probably time to get back to screenplays, and back to that economy!

  25. It's really nice to meet you Liz. Literary fiction, even the straight kind, is great. Trying to figure where you fit in is a crazy thing, especially when you write you and not the genre. But I did eventually find myself within a genre. :)

I love to read different types of fiction and non-fiction, but also can't see myself venturing into writing NF yet. Good luck on getting published! Thanks for coming by my blog! Writer’s Mark
